Direct exposure to UV radiation from the sun can result in skin cancer, a fatal yet preventable disease. One in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, but taking precautionary measures to protect the skin from overexposure of UV rays from the sun can greatly reduce this risk. Proper attire and the constant reapplication of sunscreen can help reduce the risk of skin cancer. However, a recent study by the American Academy of Dermatology showed that only 29.9% of women and 14.4% of men regularly applied sunscreen. The purpose of this medical device is to remind users to protect themselves through the reapplication of sunscreen and wearing proper attire.
There are currently other existing solutions such as the UVeBand, which is a band that reminds users to reapply sunscreen based on the UV index reading from the sensor. This device is worn on the wrist and powers on when in contact with skin. Another existing design is the UVSunSense Wristbands. While wearing this device, the user would apply sunscreen and then apply sunscreen to the wristband. The wristband would take in the UV rays and change color as it absorbs rays. Once the band reaches a certain color, the user is prompted to reapply sunscreen.
The Skin Protection Assistant is designed to report the UV index and alert the user depending on this value to complete certain tasks as well as show the amount of time the user has been exposed to the harsh UV rays.
